Servers

Within your server groups, you do have the ability to further manage the servers that are displayed by using the following
functions.

‹

Moving Servers

—Servers that are auto-populated can be moved to different groups within the Management Console

tree.

‹

Inserting Servers

—If a machine is not displayed on the Management Console, it can be manually inserted. This feature is

useful for machines that are across a router or on a different network segment. These types of machines will not
automatically appear in the Management Console because the UDP heartbeat is not passed by the router.

‹

Removing Servers

—If you do not want to see a server in the Management Console, it can be permanently removed from

the display. You might need to remove a server that was manually added, if that server is no longer needed. Or if there
are servers within the network that another administrator is responsible for, you can remove them from your display.

‹

Hiding Servers

—If you do not want to see a server in the Management Console and do not want to disable heartbeats,

you can hide the server from view. This keeps the server in the Management Console’s internal list of servers, but does
not display it in the server tree, any dialog boxes, or any field/menu selections.

‹

Unhiding Servers

—You can unhide, or display, a hidden server at any time you want to access that server. The server

will be displayed in the server tree, all dialog boxes, and field/menu selections.

Moving servers

You can move servers to groups by either of the following methods

‹

Drag and drop a server into the desired group. With this method you can move one server at a time in the left pane of
the Management Console. You can move more than one server at a time by using this method from the right pane of the
Management Console.

‹

Insert a server into the desired group. Inserting an existing server to the tree will move the first occurrence to that new
location.

A Storage Mirroring server will only appear once within the entire Management Console tree. Servers cannot be placed into
multiple groups.

Inserting servers

Use the following instructions to insert a server into the Management Console.

1.

Right-click on a group and select

New

,

Server

or highlight a group and select

Insert

,

Server

.

2.

Type the machine name or IP address and the port number, if it is different than the default.

3.

Select

Test

to determine if the machine is available and running Storage Mirroring. Depending on the results of the test,

you will see one of the following:

‹

If the machine was located and Storage Mirroring is running on it, the machine name will be inserted into the
Management Console.

‹

If the machine was located, but Storage Mirroring is not running on it, you will be prompted that the machine was
found, but Storage Mirroring is not available. You will be given the choice of inserting the machine anyway. Click

Yes

to insert the server into the Management Console or click

No

to return to the Insert Server dialog box. Enter

another server name or click

Cancel

to return to the Management Console without inserting a server.

‹

If the server could not be located, you will see a message to the right of the

Test

button stating that it was not found.

Enter another server name or click

Cancel

to return to the Management Console without inserting a server.

NOTE:

If a machine is manually inserted into the Management Console, it will automatically be saved in your
workspace and will appear the next time the Management Console is started.

NOTE:

If Storage Mirroring heartbeats are enabled or a server is listed in Active Directory, a removed server will
automatically be added back to the server list the next time a heartbeat is received. You need to disable
heartbeats to permanently remove it.

NOTE:

A server that already exists in the tree will be moved to the currently selected group if you attempt to insert
it again.

NOTE:

At any time while Storage Mirroring is attempting to locate the machine, click

Stop

to cancel the test.

If you do not manually test a machine before inserting it, Storage Mirroring will automatically test it for you.
