UPC Characteristics


The Universal Product Code (UPC) symbols can be found on almost all retail products. The UPC coding system was designed
to uniquely identify a product and its manufacturer. There are three different types of UPC bar codes: UPC-A, UPC-E Version 0,
and UPC-E Version 1.


UPC-A is a fixed length (12 digits) numeric only code, the first (high order) digit being the number system character, the next ten
being information characters, and the last (low order) digit being the Modulo 10 check digit. In the above example, the number
system is 0 and the check digit is 9. The 10 information digits represent the manufacturer (11112 above) and the product code
(35674 above). The number system is used in the following manner:
