Vexilar Open Water Mounting Kit Instructions

Before  you  install  the  transducer,  clean  the  spot  of  mud  and  oil.  Using  an

epoxy   or   silicone   glue   make   a   puddle   about   the   same   diameter   as   the

transducer   on   the   hull.   Place   the   transducer   in   the   glue.   Press   it   down

firmly,  gently  twisting  it  back  and  forth,  making  sure  that  there  are  no  air

bubbles  in  the  glue  between  the  transducer  and  the  hull.  Let  the  glue  dry

completely  before  turning  the  unit  on.

Run   the   transducer   cord   up   to   the   unit   taking   the   same   care   as   you   did

when  you  ran  the  power  cord.  Plug  the  transducer  connector  into  the  back

of  the  unit  and  screw  the  retaining  ring  down  tight.

Trolling  Motor  Mounting

To  attach  a  puck  style  transducer  to  a  trolling  motor  use  the  large  cable  tie

provided.   Notice   the   slots   in   the   transducer   for   this   purpose.   Locate   the

transducer  on  the  bottom  of  the  lower  unit  as  in  figure  B.  Run  the  cable  up

the  shaft  using  the  smaller  cable  ties  to  hold  it  in  position.  Make  sure  that

the   cable   will   not   be   damaged   by   the   motions   of   the   trolling   motor.   Plug

the  transducer  connector  into  the  back  of  the  unit  and  screw  the  retaining

ring  down  tight.

In   any   application,   if   the   transducer   cord   is   too   short,   an   optional

extension  cable  may  be  purchased.

Frequently  Asked  Questions

Q  -  Where  should  the  gain  control  be  set?

A  -  Keep  the  gain  low.  Usually  a  setting  between  0  and  3  is  sufficient  for

depths  up  to  40  feet.  It  is  a  good  idea  to  pick  a  setting  and  leave  it  there,

if   the   depth   does   not   change   significantly.   This   gives   a   good   frame   of

reference  to  be  able  to  recognize  different  bottom  types.

Q   -   Even   with   the   gain   set   on   zero   I   still   have   so   much   signal   I   can't

determine  the  bottom.  What  can  I  do?

A  -  This  can  happen  in  shallow  or  very  weedy  waters.  If  you  have  the  FL-

18,  switch  the  unit  to  the  LP  setting.  If  you  have  an  FL-8  or  FL-8SLT,  the

solution   is   to   install   an   S-Cable   in   your   transducer   line   to   cut   down   your

output   power.   This   is   an   accessory   that   is   manufactured   by   Vexilar   and

carried  by  many  retailers.

Q  -  Why  do  I  loose  the  depth  reading  when  my  boat  goes  faster?

A   -   Your   transducer   position   needs   adjustment.   The   unit   can   read   depth

at,   virtually,   any   boat   speed   provided   the   transducer   is   in   good   contact

with   the   water.   Also,   keep   in   mind   that   the   water   flow   under   the

transducer  must  be  clear  and  undisturbed  by  any  part  of  your  boat  ahead

of  the  transducer.
