19 Optimizing Performance

“Optimizing RCIP Throughput by Increasing MTU Size”
(page 99)

To optimize RCIP throughput, increase MTU size.

“Avoiding RCIP Throughput Issues during Initial
Synchronization” (page 99)

To optimize RCIP throughput during initial synchronization,
use tape.

“Optimizing Synchronization Speed over Distances”
(page 100)

To optimize synchronization with a remote system, balance
bandwidth and latency.

“Troubleshooting RCIP Autonegotiation Issues” (page 100)

If autonegotiation doesn’t function properly, adjust the
speeds of the RCIP and local switch ports.

Additional Information:

“Considering Additional Impacts on Performance” (page 100)

Optimizing RCIP Throughput by Increasing MTU Size

By default, RCIP GigE interfaces use a 1500-byte MTU setting because all vendor hardware supports
this MTU size.

To optimize throughput, consider increasing the MTU size to 9000.

“Checking Link Throughput and Latency” (page 36)

1.

Check link throughput. The output of the checkrclink
command displays the maximum MTU for the specified
RCIP links.
• If the Max MTU value is 1500, you cannot increase

MTU.

• If the Max MTU is 9000, you might be able to

increase MTU.

“Increasing MTU (Optional)” (page 37)

2.

If the Max MTU is 9000, verify that your setup allows
an MTU increase.

3.

If supported, increase the MTU.

Avoiding RCIP Throughput Issues during Initial Synchronization

During initial synchronization of the primary and secondary volumes, RCIP throughput can be as
high as 100 MB per second on a single GigE link, or 400 MB per second when four links connect
the Remote Copy pair.

To avoid high throughput during initial synchronization:

“Using Tape for Initial Synchronization and Backup”
(page 82)

Copy data to tape for the initial synchronization.
