Downloading New Operational
Code to the Switch

Overview

The following information and procedures provided in this chapter
pertain to layer 2 and layer 3 module configurations:

Upgrading from a Previous Version

Downloading a Software Image

Selecting the Image for Reboot

Resetting the Switch

Upgrading from a Previous Version

The P550/P880/P882 switches all handle configuration files
differently from previous releases. In previous releases, all
configuration information is contained in a

startup.txt

file that

is stored in NVRAM on the switch. Previous versions used

*.cfg

files that contained information about multiple types of
configuration data.

When you upgrade the switch’s embedded software to version 5.0,
the previous software version is remains in the APP1 memory
location, and the version 5.0 software image is installed into APP2.
If you want to save the previous version on the switch for a
potential downgrade, find out which APP you booted from, then
load the new image into the other APP. For example, if you boot a
previous version from APP1, download version 5.0 into APP2.
