FIELD BOOST CIRCUIT
During engine cranking, an engine controi circuit
board deiivers battery voltage to the Rotor w indings.
This "Field Boost" current is delivered to the Rotor via
W ire 4A, a field boost resistor, and W ire 4. The Field
Boost feature provides the follow ing benefits:
□ In effect, field boost current "flashes the field" on
every engine startup. Thus, if Rotor residual m agne
tism w as lost for any reason, it w ould be restored by
the act of "flashing the field" during cranking.
□ Approxim ately 4-8 volts AC output from the stator
excitation w inding is needed to turn the voltage reg
ulator on. Reid boost current builds Rotor m agnetism
early w hich, in turn, develops voltage early during
startup. The result of field boost is an early "pickup"
voltage in the stator w indings.
