Storage Management Appliance Software User Guide

device (SAN)
A host computer or a storage element connected to a Storage Area Network (SAN). A device is
usually connected to a user port on a Fibre Channel Switch (FCS) or hub. The Storage
Management Appliance discovers devices on the local SAN. See

Chapter 3

, “

Discovering Devices

and Applications

” on page 45 for information about devices and discoveries.

discovery
Process used by the Storage Management Appliance to identify devices and applications
associated with a SAN. To locate all such components you must use both IP and SAN discoveries.
See

Chapter 3

, “

Discovering Devices and Applications

” on page 45 for information about

discoveries.

element manager
A software application used to manage several storage elements of the same type. The HSG
Element Manager and Command View EVA are element managers that are installed with the
Storage Management Appliance software. Access the element managers on the Devices page
(

Figure 32

on page 51).

event
A condition change on any network device or host computer that generates a log entry or message.
For example, a device going offline is an event. Information about an event is useful for managing
a network and especially troubleshooting. An SNMP agent usually has the ability to report a
number of defined events by generating a SNMP trap message. See

Chapter 4

, “

Monitoring the

SAN

” on page 55 for more information about events and logs.

fabric
That part of a Storage Area Network (SAN) consisting of switches, hubs and links that allow hosts
to exchange data with storage elements. With multiple switches, the fabric includes the
Inter-Switch Links (ISLs) used to interconnect switches. The Storage Management Appliance uses
discoveries to identify both hosts and fabric components of a SAN.

Inter-Switch Link (ISL)
A fibre cable connecting a port on one Fibre Channel switch to a port on another switch.

IP discovery
A discovery type that identifies LAN-connected SAN devices with an enabled SNMP agent. The
IP discovery process queries every IP address in one or more specified IP ranges using one or more
community strings. See “

About Discoveries

” on page 46 for more information.
