Replacing the backplane for server models with twelve 3.5-inch hard-disk-drive bays

Attention: Do not open your server or attempt any repair before reading and understanding “Safety information”
on page iii
and “Guidelines” on page 85.

This topic provides instructions on how to replace the backplane for server models with twelve 3.5-inch
hard-disk-drive bays.

Before you begin, print all the related instructions or ensure that you can view the PDF version on another
computer for reference.

Note: To show the backplane clearly, the system fans are omitted from the illustrations in this topic.

To replace the backplane for server models with twelve 3.5-inch hard-disk-drive bays, do the following:

1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server. Then, disconnect all

power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the server.

2. If the server is installed in a rack cabinet, remove the server from the rack cabinet and place it on a flat,

clean, and static-protective surface. See the Rack Installation Instructions that comes with the server.

3. Remove the server cover. See “Removing the server cover” on page 87.

4. Locate the backplane. See “Components of server models with twelve 3.5-inch hard-disk-drive bays”

on page 36.

5. Remove all the installed 3.5-inch hot-swap hard disk drives and dummy trays (if any) from the

hard-disk-drive bays. See “Installing or replacing a hot-swap hard disk drive” on page 166.

6. Record the cable connections on the backplane and then disconnect all cables from the backplane.

7. Carefully lift the backplane straight up slightly so that the small hooks

1

on the chassis are aligned

with the corresponding holes in the backplane. Then, slowly and carefully move the backplane to the
rear of the chassis until the hooks

1

pass through the holes in the backplane and then completely

remove the backplane out of the chassis.

8. Touch the static-protective package that contains the new hot-swap hard-disk-drive backplane to any

unpainted surface on the outside of the server. Then, remove the new backplane from the package.

Note: Carefully handle the backplane by its edges.
