Multi-mode rated SCSI cabling and terminators. Multi-mode terminators allow both LVD and

single-ended devices to be connected to the same bus. They detect the type of bus and

automatically supply the correct termination. The LVD interface enables the data to be transferred

at the drive’s maximum rate.

The autoloader is also supported on SE SCSI, but this will limit cable length and may degrade

performance. Similarly, if there are SE devices attached to an LVDS bus, the autoloader’s performance is

limited to the maximum data transfer speed and maximum cable lengths of the SE bus. If necessary,

install a SCSI host adapter, software, and compatible driver(s). Refer to the manuals for the host computer

and the SCSI host adapter for detailed information.

Table 3 Supported SCSI bus types

SCSI Bus Type

Supported

Ultra160 LVD, Ultra320 LVD

Yes. These are recommended configurations.

Ultra2 LVD, Ultra Wide LVD

Yes.

Ultra wide, single-ended

Yes.

Ultra narrow, single-ended

Yes.

Fast, single-ended

Not recommended. This will degrade performance and limit cable

length.

High Voltage Differential

No. The drive will not work and you may damage the drive or controller

IMPORTANT:

The HP StorageWorks DAT 72x10 1U Tape Autoloader in NOT compatible with a standard differential

(Diff) or High-Voltage Differential (HVD) SCSI bus. This autoloader IS compatible with a narrow (50-pin)

SCSI bus using a 68-pin to 50-pin adapter that terminates the unused 18 pins (Not included with the

autoloader). These adapters are sometimes labeled high-byte termination.

LUN scanning

The HP StorageWorks DAT 72x10 1U Tape Autoloader uses a single SCSI ID and dual LUNs to control

the tape drive (LUN 0) and autoloader robotic (LUN 1). The autoloader requires an HBA that supports

LUN scanning. If it is not enabled, your host system will not scan beyond LUN 0 and will fail to discover

the autoloader. It will just see the tape drive.
Some HBAs, such as RAID controllers, do not support LUN scanning. For the most up-to-date SCSI HBA

compatibility information, refer to

www.hp.com/go/connect

.

Preparing the host

IMPORTANT:

Use proper procedures to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD). Use wrist-grounding straps and anti-static

mats when handing internal components.

Follow these general guidelines:

If necessary, install a suitably rated HBA, see

SCSI requirements

” on page 13. Remember that if

there are any SE devices on the same SCSI bus, the entire SCSI bus will negotiate down to SE

speed and severely degrade performance and limit cable length.

Make sure that your backup application and SCSI host bus adapter are compatible with the

autoloader.

If the host server is connected to a network, check with the system administrator before turning

off power.
