Tape cartridges

Before you begin using the autoloader, an understanding of the media type, use, maintenance, and

how to properly label and write-protect your tape cartridges will help you to prolong the life of your

tape cartridges as well as the tape autoloader.

The drive is also read/write compatible with HP DDS-4 and HP DDS-3 cartridges but these are not

recommended for sustained use. Lower specification media in a higher specification drive reduces

performance.

Cleaning cartridges

HP recommends weekly cleaning of the tape drive using an HP cleaning cartridge (part number

C5709A). Do not use swabs or other means of cleaning the heads. The cleaning cartridge uses a special

tape to clean the tape heads. A cleaning cartridge can only be used 50 times or as instructed on the

cartridge packaging. Always place a check mark in a box each time you use the cartridge to clean the

drive. Replace the cleaning cartridge when all the boxes are checked.

Using and maintaining tape cartridges

Before you use the autoloader and to ensure the longest possible life for your data cartridges, follow

these guidelines:

Use only the data cartridges that are designated for your model of autoloader (see

Backward read compatibility

” on page 32).
