1.1.1 SYSTEM

DESCRIPTION

The OnLine Power battery back-up system provides uninterruptible power to traffic control and
signal equipment. The total maximum power is 1500 watt at 74°C.
The Battery Backup System has a unique system protection scheme to supply uninterrupted
power to the critical traffic control and signal system whether the input power line voltage is out of
specified range or fails.
This is accomplished by providing a Power Transfer Relay (PTR) and manual Maintenance
Bypass Switch (MBS) and batteries to provide back-up power when the input power line voltage is
out of the specified range or fails. These three components can be mounted in an enclosure as
specified in California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Specifications.

The line power is applied to the MBS / PTR Assembly. The line power supports the critical load
when the input line voltage is within the specified range. When the line voltage is out of range or
fails (off-line UPS) the UPS controller detects these conditions and sends a signal to the PTR
causing the relay to transfer the load from the line to the UPS output until the line power recovers
or the batteries are fully discharged. The operating time of this mode depends upon the battery’s
status and the size of load.
The Online Power BBS is designed for a maximum of two hours operation from battery source with
1500 watt load.
