Matte Fill Button

The

Matte Fill

button determines what signal will be used as the key fill by

the keyer. When off, the key fill signal currently selected on the fill bus will
be used. When on, a matte signal will be used. Selecting the

Matte Fill

button

automatically delegates the Matte menu in the Menu panel. Matte adjust-
ments can only be made through this menu. Refer to

Matte Menus on

page 292

.

Video Key Button

The

Video Key

button determines what signal the keyer will use to cut the

hole in the background. When off, the key signal (if defined) of the source
selected on the cut bus will be used (the normal setting for a Linear key).
When on, the video signal of the selected source will be used (the normal
setting for a luminance key). If a source does not have a defined key signal,
when

Video Key

is off the keyer will produce a full raster key signal, which

is useful when the image is manipulated with a Transform Engine or
external DVE.

Note

Video Key is generally used only when the source's key signal is not appro-
priate. This would be the case for a character generator producing a wide key
(for a border or shadow) which the operator decides to matte fill. In this case,
the video signal defines the character area and usually produces a better
result.

Key Split Button

Each key source button normally controls crosspoints on two buses (key
cut, key fill) at the same time. The

Key Split

modifier button is used to select

a different key cut signal to use with the currently selected key fill signal.

When

Key Split

is held down, the key bus lights the currently selected key

cut source button. Selecting a different source changes only the key cut bus
source, and leaves the key fill bus source unchanged. The

Key Split

button

lights whenever the key is split. Also, while the

Key Split

button is held

down, the shift mode is temporarily forced to Latched to aid in selecting a
different key cut from shifted sources with one hand.

When

Key Split

is released, the Key source selector row immediately returns

to showing the key fill source and the Shift mode reverts to that defined in
User Prefs.

To cancel a key split, note the key fill source when

Key Split

is not held

down, then hold down

Key Split

and select that same source for use as the

key cut.
