Zodiak — User Manual

Section 2 — Concepts

Zodiak Digital Production Switcher configuration information is divided
into three areas, to simplify and increase the speed of reconfiguring the
system. The basic areas of Zodiak configuration are:

Engineering Setups (settings established by the engineer in charge that
affect the entire system, which never need to be changed by operators),

Suite Preferences (settings for a suite that affect all the operators
working in that suite, that are designed to suit a particular show or pro-
duction style and ensure a consistent working environment), and

User Preferences (settings that give the operator the ability to cus-
tomize his individual work surface to meet his personal preferences).

All Zodiak configuration settings are non-volatile. Disk save and load
operations are available that allow users to store configuration information
on removable media for easy transport and for use as backup copies.

Engineering Setups

Engineering Setups control how the Zodiak Digital Production Switcher’s
major components behave and interact, and how the Zodiak system inter-
acts with the rest of the facility.

Engineering Setups are not likely to change on a daily basis and so are
grouped separately from the Suite and User Preferences. Facility mainte-
nance personnel or the engineer in charge of a production truck generally
manages Engineering Setups. These parameters are usually set during
installation.

Engineering Setups information includes:

Networking (IP addresses),

Source definition (described later in this section),

External device interfaces (DDRs, VTRs, DPM, Router, etc.),

Control surface and suite definitions (identifying the operating panels
present and their relationships to one another), and

Various other system functions.
